I recently picked up a Marlin 336cb in 38-55. It's a great looking and handling gun, and I've been told the cartridge has the ballistic equivelant to the 375Win.

Anybody else out there hunt with one of these???

Thanks in advance,

Looks like not too many folk hunt with a 38-55.

You are correct sir! Guess I'm S.O.L.

I did find some other info on www.handloads.com

Thanks,

I have one but have never used it for anything...old Winchester model 1897 which was made in 1911 (after checking the serial number). The 38-55 isn't a very good calibre for anything...the bullet pretty much leaves the barrel and falls onto the ground in front of you.

I agree with you about the 38-55's of old being somewhat underpowered, but....

The new Marlins can be loaded to equal the power of the .375Win. As far as accuracy goes, the loads the guy sent with the rifle are accurate to 3" at 200 yards from a cheap Midway rest. :o Muzzle vel of 1884fps...

This brings me to the reason for my question on loads.

I should most likely answer myself by just duplicating his loads that used the Barnes original X. My only thought was trying to use powders I had, and not buying more just for one gun that gets shot maybe 4x a year. ( rather be playing with my M1A)

Thanks for your input.

Chris~

Nice looking rifle for cowboy shooting and close range whitetail hunting. I had a winchester 94 XTR in 375 its about like a 30-30win but with heavy bullets. Outlaw

Win, you can use many of the same propellants that you use in your M1-A.

Hodgdons #26 lists loads for both the .38-55 and the .375 Win using propellants that fit right into the range of optimum burning rates for the .308

H-322, 748, BL-C(2), will all work well, and if you are loading for a .308 gas gun, I KNOW you must have a can of IMR 4064 sitting around somewhere, right?

If you need charge weights, let me know.
