I am going to use the 145 gr C.O.I Magnus heads w/bleeder blades in.And with a well placed shot ought to be a deadly combo.Provided i have the opp.

Outlaw, what kind of luck do you usually have on your Idaho spring bear hunts? Bear season was a bust last fall in Northern Minnesota. They would not come in to the bait sites because there was too much food in the woods (berries and nuts). I did not see one last fall. Do you spot and stalk hunt in Idaho? What rifle do you usually use? Bear hunting in Northern Minnesota is a tree stand and bait affair. I currently use a 1895M .450 Marlin lever action for my bear gun. ^_^

Beargrease, I do alot of spot and stalk type hunting for bear in Idaho, with fair luck. I have also baited bears in days of old in Washington state with good luck. I have shot bear with 243's-257 rob's-308win- 30-06-12ga.-archery. I like the 308win and 30-06 the best. ;) Outlaw

I didn' get the spring bear tags but I have already got the fall tags . I like to hunt them in the high coutry when the berries are ripe . we have a few where we live but I have never hunted them ,its just to brushy without using the dogs and they don't allow that anymore .luck to everyone on the spring hunt .

Same here in New York State we used to have 3 days to run dogs on bear but they took that from the bear hunters. now its no dogs and no bait just fair chase to hard to find a bear in this state only if you get real lucky you might get one in your life here. there is only fall hunting here also thats why i decided to go to Idaho for a spring bear hunt more bear there and you can hunt them with dogs and bait them in some areas.

Spring bear hunting in Idaho is great. Spot and stalk. You have the woods basically to yourself. The only problem this year is that the snow pack right now in the mountains looks like it does ~April 15 here in southern Idaho. Hopefully it won't be too "green" come April 15th!

irishman, the middlefork area can be great, kinda hard to get into. Go down the river road from Northfork Idaho, north of Salmon Idaho. You can drive down to the mouth of the Middlefork, there's a packtrail that takes off from there, but you can also hunt the Main Salmon river area and don't over look the Panther creek area. You can drive into all these areas. ;) Outlaw

have hunted the Avery area in May. Lots of snow last year but did get nice chocolate bear scoring 19 1/2. Have done well there with bait. Lots of bears,Damn rough to spot and stalk or run dogs but plenty do. low snow pack means be hunting by May or get a good outfitter. Should be 100% with rifle if you use a outfitter. Good Luck!

I am going to do some more checking into this. I am not sure if i can hunt any open land or if it has to be in a certain unit or section. I have a GPS and know how to use it. I don't know anything of the idaho area though. May be relieing on you for advise where to hunt. Unless we plan a hunt together

Mossy, that very well could happen if things can get worked out for next spring. Are you thinking next spring?
I have a hunt planed with my son this fall. But with fuel prices the way they are he wants to hunt closer to home for Deer and Elk.
So I'll get a whitetail tag and a fall bear tag for myself and he'll have a Mule deer tag and an Elk tag. There or no whitetail in the area he wants to hunt.
There are bear over most of Idaho so I could tag along with him and look out for a bear, and have a good time with him while he hunts mule deer and Elk.
Then after the hunt with him I can go over to my Whitetail area and hunt whitetail by myself. I'm not going to hunt elk this years unless its on a open hunt area and not a permit area. Outlaw.
