Assuming a few things....

1) Hunting crows in your area with rifles is legal
2) Optimal field conditions
3) You can duplicate the shot 50% of the time

How far out could you hit a crow and what rifle and caliber would you be using?
When I say optimal conditions I mean:
-no wind
-you have a bipod but no sand bags
-your best rifle that you own
-the sun is not messing with your eyes
-the crow is still
-you have been doing nothing all day so your heart rate is slow

I say that 250-300 yards is my limit.....what is yours?

In the fall I get a few at around 200 to 250 yards in the apple trees here . So far I have done pretty good with my 223Rem . This fall I never missed one ,but everyone gets lucky right .

Funny thing,

I think my

plain jane ruger 270 with a varix III 2 -8 scope can out shoot my

heavy long barrel stainless steel laminated 22-250 ruger with a high power varixIII scope.

As a matter of fact when I was thinking of the question, I had my 270 in mind when I asked it.

600yds, sigthron scope floating just inches over his head, and the triggers squeazed on my 25.06, thats one dead crow, ohhhhhh we got hit em, well then make that yardage about half at the max, 200yds seem to be about the furthest. Ive taken them

I need another varmint rig, stead of this high power heavy junk, lol well nothn wrong with 75vmax at 3500

250 yds with my 243 and 223 on them blasted crow.In the winter months i can shoot them on my brothers golf course.I put a owl decoy and two crow decoys in the fairway and lay out on the tee box.And wack away at them.I probobly do better than 50%.The 50 % would be more like 275 + yds.

I recall laying under a blanket in a corn field. I had the owl decoy up on a tree. Man those crows would come from all around. Up goes the blanket and the 4th of July starts with the 12 guage. That was the fun part.

I think crows have sort of a leader b/c every so often when you take a crow out of a flock they get really mad at you.

Some pretty good shooting there guys.

The course where i shoot them is full of pine trees. And there are alot of crows. It's like a fly way through there for them.
I also know if you wound one.The action gets pretty hot too!!

Tiff,

The rifle is a Savage Model 10 Tactical in .223, Choate Ultimate Varmit stock w/Harris bipod, BSA Contender 6x24x40 AO glass and handloaded Hornady 68 gr BTHP's. I can and have taken crows out to 250 yards under your setting w/a 80%+ success ratio. At 50% odds, I'd dare say better than 300 yards. In the off season, I literally lay on the fields in search of crows. One would be surprised at how much it keeps your shooting skills honed, not to mention the fact of the satisfaction of hittin' a small target at extended range!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta Love It!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, when I get my new toy finished we'll see how much further we can push those figures. Have a 1909 Argentine 98 large ring action being fitted w/a 28" Douglas XX #8 contour barrel (one inch at the muzzle) in the 6.5/300 WSM wildcat. It'll be sporting a target thumbhole from Richard's Microfit and a single set trigger from Kepplinger. The ol' boy that put me on this cartridge is a local gunsmith and is currently shooting one w/his loads pushin' 3600+ fps w/a 140 bullet! Stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!

With 50% odds, my limit would be 300 yards, or maybe slightly farther on a better shooting day.

I don't really shoot many crows but have a few. Years ago I remember sighting in a Winchester 88 in 284win caliber with the win 125gr load dead on at 25yds and went looking the hills over, seen a crow flying and land in the top of a fir tree about 200yds out. I set down and off my knees took a shot holding dead on. I was shocked when I hit him and blew him out of that tree. I'm sure I have shot a few more just can't think of any more. After reading this post I mite have to start looking for some to shoot. Outlaw

Mossy, Da Law, Jerry and outlaw,

With us around the crows would be shakin in their boots. I believe that some of us could give some competition to some of the best in the military.

When you think about hitting a crow at 300 yards, that is great shootin. That is what you call a crow terminator. Most people couldn't hit the broad side of a barn at that range. Let alone see the barn.

When I tell some of my nonhunting buddies that I can hit a dime on the other end of a football field 90% of the time they are in awe. I believe that good shooting is an art form. Keep up the good work.

Evan,

Hey, I just dusted off my BB gun earlier this week as well. It's a ten pump. When I get off of work I take the dog with me so she can stretch her legs. Even with no birds around it is fun to knock off some pine cones. Shooting all day is cheap cheap cheap.

I'd like to get a full size spring powered BB gun that sends them at over 1,100 fps. Not one of those that use the barrel to pump it though. It seems that it would be hard to keep it accurate with one of those. I saw the other day that they have one. The pump handle is off to thte side which means that it is a solid barrel that can be kept sighted in. They're expensive though. I can almost get a new 17 for what they want in one of those.

I like plinking with a BB gun. A lot can be said for praticing with one. The trigger makes the triggers on my off the shelf rifles seem like a dream. It kind of teaches me to make the shot count. I've killed rabbits with one.

Just gotta love those BB guns.

I know what you mean, when i was 10 or so maybe 12 or inbetween there I had little cheap plastick stocked bb gun that also shot pellets, I learned pretty quick that the pellets were better, I used to lay under the trees just waiting for any kinda bird to land close by, then Id catch my breath and slowly bring the rifle up and knock one outa the tree , but sometimes theyd sence me moveing and the flock would take off. it did teach me alot about makn the shot count, and sometimes seeing that bb or pellet fall outa the air before it ever reached its target, thats holdover. lol
