Have any of you seen any of the carbines with a scout style scope mount for mounting a pistol scope on the M44. I talked to the nice people at Midway USA, they offer a scout mount from B-Square. The monthly catalog does not list this mount, therefore there are no pictures. I am curious as to how well the mount attaches to the gun. I have seen several mounts for different military firearms that are pretty cheesey. If i am going to put on a scope I would like the mount to be as sturdy as possible, and not junk like some I have seen. I have also seen more traditional scope mounts for the M44, but you have to change the bolt to a bent bolt type, and I would prefer to leave my bolt as is. Also I have not shot a rifle with a scout mount before but it seems that it would be fairly comfortable. Any help you guys can offer would be appreciated.

Dingo,
As for the scout type rifles, I own a .308 98 mexican mauser that I "fabbed" a scout base for and is a pleasure to shoot. As far as the mounts are concerned, yes, most are "cheesy" at best. I'll give 'em credit, they try, but still fall short in my opinion. As for the bolt issue, the M44 is like the 98 mauser in retrospect of the straight bolt. If you use a reciever mount, you'll have to modify the bolt in order to clear the scope just like that on a 98 mauser. For the mauser, I used a TC Contender Redfield base, I simply removed the rear sight w/the help of a little heat on the sight base, drilled and tapped the corresponding holes to match the base and voila! Before I added the rings I reinstalled the wooden handguard and then mounted a Leupold 4 power extended eye relief pistol scope. The base/scope are rock solid and the rig looks plain cool to boot.
I'm sure that you could do something similiar w/the M44 as well, I don't own a Nagant but at the request of a fella installed one of the reciever mounts that required cutting off the bolt handle and drilling/tapping a hole for the new handle  . Lookin' at the finished product was like tryin' to choke down a dose of castor oil to me :P  , but he was as happy as a spotted pup w/it! Guess that is all that matters tho'!
I'm not sure if it would work, but one might be able to mount one of the side mount rails like those found on the SKS and AK's and get the desired effect. I'm just not sure if it would give enough clearence for the bolt tho'?
Anyhow, the mount that I installed on the mauser worked fine and is a real shooter. The contour of the contender barrel is similiar to the mauser and may be close on the M44. I had the base, rings and scope already and a short time later, had a scout rifle!!! Hope this sheds some light on your project, let us know what you come up with!
