For a couple of years I have talked about going pig hunting, Karrie thinks I'm nuts ::big . I live in northern WI and know basically '0' about pigs other than I mix it with venison and eat ribs and bacon  ! Are there states where you can just buy a license and go hunt them and have a chance? How? Where? I read some of you guys shoot a few where do you hunt? I tried a few web sites last winter but nothing really turned me on enough to go do it!

Hey DickPal,
I live in Northern IL ands have hunted wild boar in Southern IL.I know Ted Nugent has place in Michagan(Jackson)where he offers i believe it's a two day hunt.
I read a post here at huntseek where some members have hunted wild hogs running in Southern Indiana.Just have to get permission to hunt private property. No tags or Lic. Required.I had a friend that went to TN. to the Cumberland Mountains(Wilderness Hunting Resort)but he was dissappointed with the set up.
I guess i depends what type of hunt your looking for and how far are you willing to travel. But it makes for a great off season hunt and is very excitting.Heres a link to the place in IL it;s near Paris IL ]

Thanks mossyhorns for the info. I went to the site and it looks alot better than what I looked at before. Have you been there?
Are there really wild hogs running around in Indiana? I also get these two ideas of what hogs are, 1 are these smaller pig type critters and 2 are these big 3-400lb beasts. I remember reading a long time ago about people shooting animals and wild pigs came and ate it, stuff like that. I would guess the farms and ranches are the big boys, called Russian Boars! What type are the wild ones? ::big Sorry but like I said I know '0'!

Yes i hunted Coal Creek once.Pat and Stacey are super people. It is a nice hunt and pat lets you hunt your way.He basicaly is there for a back up and lend a hand dragging.
As far as wild hogs go,These are not penned raised. The sows are bred inside a pen, then turned loose. And the hogs have to fend for themselves.
A true russian boar doesnt get 400 lbs,They are a smaller breed. The Europeans are bulkier in size. But just dont have that mean look to them that the Russians do.

DickPal: Just how serious are you about hunting hogs? We have lots of them in Texas to the point of them being considered a varmint. The season is open 24-7 and there is no bag limit.
We run them with dogs and catch them alive. Here is how it works. The strike and bay dogs will find a hog and bay it up. They are silent on the trail or track and open when they lay an eyeball on them. We then take in a pit bull with body armor on and let him catch the hog. As soon as the pit latches on the hog the other dogs join in and get some to. We then go in and throw the hog and hog tie him/her. It is great fun and will keep you real alert.
I was hooked the first time I ever went. We took a guy last year and you could not have hooked him more with crack.

Don't let that stop you, It's not the only way we hunt hogs in Texas. That is one way alot of people do it. There are alot of ranches in Texas offering day hunts for hogs. Prices range from $50 and up. The liscense requirement is only a small game liscense and it is around $48 dollars for non-resident 5 day liscense. I would recomend doing a search for hog hunting and just look around...Good luck B)

I think I'd be the shoot and get it over with type too.
I think hunting them at night would be cool. Nothing like having green eyes charge you at close range.
On second thought a 270 at 100 or more yards sounds safer.

Only problem with that is that a hogs eyes dont glow like other anmals. Some say they don't glow at all. I prefer hunting them at night but only because they seem to move more in cooler weather.

Well fellas I also hunt hogs in Texas and it would be an eye opener to see more hogs than this.....For you far northern guys hogs in Texas are considered a varmint. Alot of ranchers offer hog hunts and I go anually with my work buddies...Some of them like to use dogs and when the dogs pen up a hog they rush in and use a knife....."NOT 4 ME". I standby with my marlin lever action 357mag...The Arrow Head Ranch in south Texas is a great place to go and you have lots of coyotes to add to the prize....Alot of places near San Antonio offer 3 hogs for $180..not bad for some freezer meat....Good hunting and be safe for your own safety always carry a backup in case you get put up a tree for a log time...

I know this is a late reply to this thread, but I just joined huntseek. I did not know TX had so many hogs and season was 24/7, I have always wanted to try hunting hogs. I would like to take one with a bow and one with a rifle. How far are the shots with a rifle? I have a new 300 win mag and wouldn't mind tryin to take one with it, if it isn't too much gone, if it is I can borrow my brothers .270 or my dads .243.
Should I bring my 9MM Ruger as a side arm? :)

Welcome to HuntSeek Kev,it's never to late to reply to topics here, glad to have you aboard!!
There are several states that have a open season on wild hogs. They do make a great off season hunt when the post season blues set in.Like ole Tim Allen from Tool Time would say "More power- More power" lol Sounds like you got yourself a great gun there. And can't wait to drop something with it.Shot ranges can be whatever you make them. You want a 200+ yd shot, you got the gun for it.I stalked to within 18 yds of a hog for a bow shot. And the handgun isn't a bad idea for backup either.Them boars are mean and like to charge you.
So set yourself a date and go have some fun.And let us know how you do.

Hi all
What is the ave. weight of the hogs they kill in Texas using dogs and a knife. I went on a hunt here in Virginia. I shot a small 50 pounder and was gutting it and talking to my buddy. He told me a hog was watching us and shot it in the face at 50 ft. His face was all he could see . He was using a 12 ga with 3' 000 copper plated buckshot. The hog went crazy and hit the trail we were on at full speed. I was nealing and my buddy was siting. The 200 pound hog was as tall as we were when he came out of the thick stuff. His 2nd shot was at 20 feet solid in the chest didn't slow him down a little. Just before he ran into us he turned I don't know why. His 3rd shot was low in the shoulder broadside at 8 ft broke both front legs still no slowing down. I got a shot off with blood covered hands as we lost sight of him going into the swamp. I made my buddy wait 20 minutes before we started tracking him he only made it another 30 yards. I have herd the stories of how tough they are but until you see it for yourself it's hard to imagine. I could picture a lot of dogs hanging on this one trying to slow him down. Not much fat on these guys lean, mean and armor plated.

I've never hunted them, but want to very bad. I want the real thing though no feral hogs for me. I've check around and for 500.00 you can get a really good hunt 3 days lodging, food, and they even video your hunt, dress your hog out and also have their own taxidermist on the premiess. You have you choice of stalking, stand hunting,or using dogs. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the outfitter but my buddy has the info. I think he said it was in southern Ohio. I can get info if you want it.
Later, Scott
