Well, the weather finaly cleared and the range opened. Took the 300 fatboy out for the first time in about 5 months and decided 1 thing, I'm buying an aftermarket recoil pad. I have heard lots of good things about the Pachmayr pads but there is a new kid on the block, the Simms Vibration Labs, recoil pad. I understand they have been making bowhunting stuff for a while and have heard some very good inital reports on their recoil pads. I was wondering if anyone in here has had any personal experience with either/both. They are the same price at Cabelas so that isn't a factor.
thanks for the input,
Soft Shoulder.

I put a Pachmayr on my 1895G, its the only one I have tried so far so this is not a comparason, and I am very happy with it. It really takes the hardness out of the thump better than I thought it would. I also have a 300 Fat Boy in the Composite Stalker, and I may put one on it, however I have the same rifle in 223Rem for practice and plinking so the "chubby one" never gets to beat me up too much. :D I hope I don't ever hold the Fat one like I hold the Skinny one somtimes though! ;)pir

I'm here to tell you that that is not a good thing when you do. I spent the summer shooting my heavy barreled .223 and my first shot with the scoped shotgun for deer season really cracked me across the nose.
For aftermarket recoil pads I use Morgan adjustables.

I'm not sure but I think the fact that for the last 6 months I have only shot my 22-250 might have led to my "soft shoulder"". I have never gone that long with out shooting at least my 270, but I sold it last summer, and the 300 WSM gets a little pricy to go plinking. I'm going to Idaho after elk this fall and want to be very familiar with my WSM and the 180 gr loads, so to make a long story short I ordered the pachmyer today, will let you guys know how it works. Thanks for the input guys,
Bob

Medicboy the pricey part :o and the selection :( for both my 300WSM and 45-70 are what got me into reloading. Do you load? If not you should its a great hobby. And talk about a way to get to know your guns :) And a reason to shoot ;bang_em Then when you are at the range scrounging brass and you find a bounch of any one caliber you need a new gun so you can use the brass :D

As of right now I don't reload, I do keep all my brass with the intention of doing it some day. I have a friend just up the road that has offered to teach me all I want to know about reloading and work with me on his equipment till I am comfortable enough to be on my own. I also have a son that just turned 1 and a house that we bought with the intention of fixing up, so spare time on my side is very rare. My wife is starting to think "I'm going to the range" is code for I'm going to go search for my sanity. Heh, in a way I guess she is right. I don't think she cares as long as it keeps me away from that redhead at work. ;)

Jerry,
Can you give us the reasons you prefer the Kickeez over the other recoil pads. I'm going to be adding a pad to a new shotgun and I remember
several years ago in one of Dary's posts he mentioned he liked Kickeez. :P
