View Full Version : I Missed

Had an 8pt walk into my 30 yard shooting lane today. I drew as he was getting into my first lane but didn't get done before his vitals were blocked by a tree. Then he stopped.
I braced my knee against the riser to take the strain off my bow hand but that didn't help my string arm.
I eventually let the bow down and waited him out. When he started moving it was fast again so I didn't have much time. Between rushing the shot and being tired from holding full draw for so long I sailed it over top of him.
I'm so disgusted with myself. A measured distance and a shot I know I can make (I've practiced that shot out of my blind).
At least I didn't wound him (but left to right it was on so almost any hit would've put him down). He almost came back for a second shot but wouldn't walk the extra seven yards to the shooting lane so it seems I didn't spook him too bad.
Although when I went to get my arrow I did spook a doe on the hill who had worked in. I guess I called her in when I was trying to get the buck to come back.
I tried blaming the bow but I just got in from testing my 30yd pin and it was me. I guess the good news is that since it's not the bow I'm free to go out early in the morning.

Sorry to hear about the shot gone bad Myk.I must have gotten lucky then.
I had a 8 pt about 20 yds away with Very young trees about 5 ft tall between us.I watched that buck work his was towards a path in the timber, giving me a unobstructed shot.He held up in some thicher branches just before the path. And i waited him out.And like a ghost he just disappearded somewhere.I never seen or heard him move off.Really puzzled me.lol
So i eventually make to a stand site i have for my climber. And got set in.Hour later 2 smaller does come running down the pathway from behind past me.So i figured something had them on the move.My senses hieghtened,i listened for anything snapping or cracking from behind me w/o turning myself around in the stand.Within 5 minutes i heard a crack below me and to my left. There is a med sized doe workin around the base of thr tree. The Scent-Loc suit and Hunter edge really works. She was never alarmed.I let her mill her way out past me to about the same spot i took my first doe and released. The cam hit the rail of my climber arm.And the arrow hit the dirt directly below her.She jumped up in the air and spun around then looked at the arrow and smelled it.Just long enough for me to nock another arrow and adjust my stance. And put it through the boiler room.Them Montec heads sure like to break through bone.Shattered the shoulder blade on the oppisite side exit.
Now i have the rest of the season to wait out a book buck.
Myk we need to talk about setting a weekend so we can hook up with tcoop and possiblly realtree for some bowhunting(Huntseeks 1st Annual IL's Whitetail Bowhunt....lol)

At least they are coming into that shooting lane area regularly for me. As long as I can keep from spooking them out of there I stand a good chance this year, he didn't ever look towards my blind even after the shot so they are used to it being there.
I'm usually free (enough to go hunting at least :) ). I think I'm going out on Oct.23 for the duck/goose opener and probably pheasant or duck hunting the first weekend in Nov. So it's pretty much up to Tcoop since I'd be getting a ride from him.

Well, if I'm not killed out (unless I decide to go buy more tags), does are all I have left :)
I'll make another post since the ending is much happier than "I missed" :)
It's doubtful I buy more tags, I've still got shotgun and another bow tag and I can only go through so many deer a year. As it is I'm planning on getting to sleep in during shotgun season.
How hard I push them with bow really depends. I sort of have a doe very well patterned and she's messing right by our shotgun shack. So I may build up the floor to shoot from and go after her.
After sitting down there all day I'm pretty sure the buck ducked the shot. There's no way my arrow hit where it did and missed him otherwise.
