today was a most memorable day in the woods. my hunting buddy(aka mossyhorns) took me hunting with him this morning and we had a little trouble finding my stand in the dark, being that it was the first time and only time we had been to it since we put it up. well after we found it and i got settled in, it was about a half an hour later and behind me i saw three deer moving pretty fast towards me. i thought that maybe a buck was following them the way they were bolting through the woods. well what i saw next i will never forget. the deer ran right under my stand and to my amazement it was a doe, a fawn, and a coyote right on there tail. after they passed under me they went up a little hill and i saw the doe turn and start coming back down the side of the hill when all of a sudden i heard a long loud bawwwww from the fawn. i could hear the coyote wrestling with the fawn as he growled like a dog playing tug-a-war with a rope. all of a sudden i hear more foot steps behind me and it's another coyote passing through to the feast. i couldn't see the action due to the thick cover, but i could hear the flesh and ligaments tear with each bite they took. my heart was racing with all that had just happened but at the same time i was thinking to myself, i'm not going to see another deer all day with these coyotes feasting 40 yards away from me. well i was wrong about that. about an hour later i had a doe come within 25 yards of me on the opposite side of the coyotes feast and a half hour after that another doe came the from the same route. once both does got within 25 yards of me, each time they started snorting for about a minute straight and then left the area. they were upwind of me so i wasn't for sure if they spotted me or if they could smell the kill in the air. well about 10:00 mossyhorns came by and i explained to him what i had experienced. i got down from my stand and we walked up the hill 40 yrds and there she was all torn up. thanks to mossyhorn and his digital camera everyone can see the end result. (he will be posting the picture here) this classic example of the predator and its pray will be a day i will never forget and i will love telling this hunting story for years to come. mossyhorns, thanks for the opportunity to hunt with you and giving me lifelong memories. realtree

Makes one wonder what Myk and tcoop are in story for hey. That is one of them Kodak moments.Crazy thing is the property owner wants the coyotes around. And i want to hunt them. The evening b-4 realtree and i were talking with the owner after hunting when the coyotes got to yipping all over and around us.So i had to get the cronk hand caller out and do a little yipping back at them.
Yea we did do a little head scraching that morning trying to find which bottoms your stand was in lol........GPS won't let that happen again anyhow.I'll keep you updated on the activity through out the week.

You guys did a great job of explaining and showing the results on the impact coyotes have on other wildlife resources. May I suggest that you tiedown the deer carcass so the coyotes can't drag it off, and situate it where you can approach it undetected and slam a few dogs while they feast. Coyotes will revisit the carcass until it is completely devoured and this will provide an excellent opportunity for popping a couple of them. I found a fawn the other day about 2 days after coyotes killed her and within 3 days all left was bones and hair. I took a digital. I'll see if I can find it and post here today. Take care.

Thanks for the story and the pics!

I bet more teenagers would hunt if the hunting magazines would show more pictures like these.

This is one you'll never forget.

I have to wonder why the land owner wants the yotes around.

The hind quarter looks pretty eaten up but I notice that in front of the leg there is a spot that the yotes got. I bet he got his jaws between the leg and the body and pulled her down.

I am pretty sure thats how it took her down.I checked over the neck and didn't show any bit marks.Went back to the spot today and they already had dragged it off.It will start stinking and i'll be able to find where they drug it to.
I can't for the life of me figure out why he wants coyotes around. His parents are naturalists and have a grasslands, they want the coyotes to kill the pheasants that eat the prairie grass seeds.

We have a real problem here this year with coyotes killing deer and it looks like we aren't the only one . Most people don't believe they kill the older deer but thats not true . good luck on your hunting them .
