View Full Version : I Stink W/O A Release

Took the bow out yesterday. I didn't have the release handy so I just used fingers to pull back.
My accuracy stinks when I pull back with just my fingers. I hit the target twice but the other ones usually went wide to the right. Also, when I pull back with the fingers it puts the end of the arrow a little too close to my left hand fingers.
Note to self: Use release next time.

Most people do suck with fingers on the new compounds. The high let off lets the string relax too much at full draw and that is where you end up torquing the string at release. They make modules that adjust the let off on many bows.
Also bows have to be tuned differently for release or fingers and most rests don't do both. Release arrows flex up and down, finger arrows flex side to side.
If you use a strap release strap it to the bow riser. If it's a handheld keep it clipped on the string.

Myk,
You've taught me so much in the last month!!!! Thanks. What you said makes a lot of sense.

Tifford a suggestion if i may, buy 2 releases.Could'nt count the times i've gotten in my stand to find i dropped my release somewhere between the stand and truck.I keep the spare in my backpack. Also you will want to make sure the wrist strap is long enough to wrap and lock around your cold weather gloves.I've had a couple that was to short. And didn't think about it when i bought them at the time. Then had to change releases in the middle of the season after getting use to shooting with the other. And when it's cold you don't want to shoot with your fingertips then. They will go numb/sting on you from the release of the string.

Thanks Mossy!
I was thinking about getting another one. I think they make one for the palm of the hand. The one that I have now wraps around the wrist, connected to sort of a straight piece of metal and has a trigger on the side. I have to be extremely careful not to touch the trigger when drawing back or it will go off. This means putting my trigger finger behind the trigger til I shoot which is sort of awkward.....unless I can find that palm one, I'll have to get use to it.
You have made up my mind to get another one.

Does yours do relaxed trigger shooting? (Where you hold the trigger back to keep the jaws closed.)
I had to switch to one of those because pulling a trigger was causing me to flinch. Relaxing is more natural for bow shooting IMO.

I'd be lost without one. I keep mine locked on the string, when I grab the bow I put on the release, when I put it down for the day, in the case or at home, I lock it back on the string. It is like that feeling of having your wallet in your pocket after a few months of it, feels funny hunting with a gun and no release!

Mine will not release until the trigger is pulled......However, the trigger doesn't require hardly any pressure to set it off. I feel like I could blow on it and it would go off.
When I was in the store getting ready to buy it last fall, I drew about 1/2 way back and accidentally brushed the trigger and the arrow went 1/2 way into a foam block. ::blush
That is a good idea keeping it on the bow.....I feel stupid every so often ::blush
I am the most unorganized person you'll ever meet. Give me a week and I can find anything in the house.
Just got a $900+ bonus.....I'll be looking for that palm release this weekend.

Tifford i have both releases you are referring to.I favor the wrist type release. But i do practice using both releases.I also won't buy anymore releases that use ball bearings instead of jaws.I kept blowing out the bearings.

Just got back from the store. Along with some turkey stuff I got another release.
This one fits in your palm. You notch the string in it and pull back. To fire there is a knob for your thumb. I think I'll like this one.
The only thing I wish it had was a velcro strip to wrap around your wrist just in case it slips out fo your hand after you've fired an arrow.
If the weather is nice I'll give it a try Sat.
Turkey season is one week and one day away. It is also the time that I get a week off..........Gotta love it.

That was the only release he had. I'll keep my eye out for one that fires after you relax.

Myk,
That looks just like my first release. Mine is a true fire but only opens if the trigger is pulled. Mine also has a black strap and is not camo. I'll order it Sat.
Thanks

Try pushing the trigger in and pulling it back. If it closes the jaws it works on relaxing the trigger finger.
Not all Tru-Fires do that, but mine is black and it does.

Did you get all the way up in the tree stand before you realized you for got your bow? :P (Oh, thats right, you hunt from the ground.) Did you hunt anyway with the arrows like a spear? I have forgotten a lot of things, but never my bow.

I was getting dressed and talking to my friend and his wife. I got to grabbing my bow and said that I had to go back home.
I think they were still laughing ten minutes later when I got back.
