After the long awaited day arrives Oct 1st.You clothes are scent free, you have done your scouting you have your stand on a heavily used trail, you know the does are useing it daily.
Opener morning your in your stand, the sun begins to rise as the faint light begins to illuminate the timber. The birds begins to chirp and jump from branch to branch.A squirrel comes out from his hole and peaks out at the mornings first light. You can hear a few leaves falling through the trees from the weight of the mornings heavy dew. Then you hear the snap of a twig, your sense hieghten instantly. You muscles freeze in place as your eyes search for the source. They they are, slowly walking the trail 35 yds away.Browseing on some brush checking the air for any sense of danger. You slowly reach for your bow and position yourself,You go through your check list, control my breathing, wait till she broadside, draw when her vision is obstructed, pick a spot behind the shoulder,.....Ok draw she can't see me,center the pin, thumb behind the ear, kisser button in the corner of my lips, ease the grip off the riser some...steady now..........

Ok from here it could be all practice for the big boy later......OR

Would you let er fly and take the doe opener day???

Take the doe unless you suspect the big boy is behind her.

Of course in NC you can take 6 deer. If I was somewhere else, I might wait for the big one.

It's brown isn't it :)

I'm more likely to remember the shotgun deer last year and pass on a large rutting buck than I would pass on a doe.

Meat in the freezer. Then start waiting for the trophy. However, if I would have seen a nice buck behind her, I would have taken my chances.

Until I have meat in the freezer, the only thing I would let pass is a small buck with a nice small rack. Got to let them grow up. Last year I took a small buck 45 min. after the season opened because he had a weird rack. 4 points on one side and a long spike on the other. I didn't want him to spread that weird rack in the gene pool.
