Been having a hard time getting a hold of the guy who owns my favorite deer hunting ground. Found out why tonight. He has leased it out to someone for hunting, so he can't let me hunt any more.
That makes 4 properties I have lost in my area in the last 10 years.
1 sold and developed, now a neighborhood w/ $500,000 homes
2 Guys son is hunting it
3 ten guys hunting 60 acres
4 and now this one.
Boy this is frustrating. Sure wish I could afford to buy my own land.

If one of the ring road corridors goes through it's right through one of my two hunting areas.
My other area is a pretty long haul. Too long to make quick trips before sunset or quick trips after work in the morning.

Your not the only one losing property tcoop
I called a guy that i had done a carpet job for last year in trade for hunting.I never hunted it last year. And told him i would save it for this year since it was so late in the season. He said he wasn't sure if i could hunt.To call him in Nov.I told him the season starts Oct 1st.He hesitated and then said to call him in two weeks. To me a deal is a deal and he agreed. And this kinda upsets me that he even is hesitating about it.
If he doesn't let me hunt he is going to get a bill in the mail and realize it would have been cheaper to let me hunt.
Then the timber i had to hunt last year that was new and i shot the 10 pt out of.That guy moved from the farm. And i can no longer hunt it either.

I forgot about a couple of other places I lost.
When they put in 474 it cut one of my hunting spots in half. That is the one that is now developed.
Last year my dad sold 2 beautiful properties. One 40 and one 180 acres. They were both in 15 year CRP land and a lot of it had been planted up in trees and food plots. We did real good on it hunting pheasant and quail. But there was just too much cover to deer hunt. Every time I set up to deer hunt, I would see deer just out of range. So I usually hunted his smaller properties.

Heres my bad news for tonight.
At 3pm i got home home from work.About 7:45 i drove 5 blocks to the grocery store.Went in for only five to ten minutes.About half way across the parking lot i noticed smoke rising from the front of my van as it was the only vehicle around. Then i noticed the orange glow on the pavement beneath the engine area.So i dropped the bags ran in the store asked for a extinguisher like quick. As i got to the van it was blazing pretty good.I started spraying under the bumper up towards the engine.Till the extinguisher was empty. But it didn't stop the fire. Two policemen arrived from a call to the fire dept. They emptied two extinguishers and still didn't go out.My the time the fire dept got there. The whole front end was engulfed in flames. The fire did enough damage to wire hoses ect... but the dept they really boogered up the hood and fenders prying trying to get the hood opened.Even took the axe to the latch and front end and still never did get it to open.
Maybe i should write a letter to Opera and ask for a new Van !!

Wow Mossy,
Sorry to hear about your van. How old was it? Was it your work vehicle? Was it insured?
Which sucks most, not getting to hunt that ground or losing your van?

Mossy,
I feel your pain. It sucks when you lose a good hunting place, doesn't it?
Sounds like a good van. Lets get together and load it up with 'yote carcasses.

Yep like a deep cut.
Yes lets, realtree and i are talking about driving down south to hunt some publiclands in the National parks this fall. And doing a rifle hunt in WI.It's not like i would let myself miss out.Just that it was a good deer area. And never had a problem there.Untill someone was giving some authority and now he wants to show it and belittle my brothers postion there. There is no other reason for it.The deer will start doing their damage and it will cost them to repair it at his arrogances expense.
So i hit three farms today that i've eyeballed over the years. One said no ,but i did get permission to hunt(deer/pheasant/coyote) two of them. Here Friday is opener and i don't even have a stand up or had a private place to hunt till today.I'm going to miss having a place all to my self i know that.

I went and scouted a place that I can hunt that I never have. It is 120 acres but only a small corner w/ some trees. The rest is corn/bean fields and a small pond. There is a large timber across the road from this place, and a small river about 1/2 mile away.
The deer are coming out of the timber, crossing the road and eating the corn along the few trees on the property. I didn't see any tonight, but the trail is pretty good. I think I may go and try to hunt it before they get the corn out. That probably won't be too long the way they are getting the crops out around here.

I went out to a Grasslands preserve tonight and talk to the manager.I had to fill out a application and am on a waiting list(??????).The neighboring property is one of the places i got permission to deer and pheasant hunt. It's privately owned but a part of the grasslands, and the people are also stewards to the public grounds. So hopefully it's not to long of a waiting period.Only 6 bowhunters are permitted and once in.It's a permeant spot till you drop out.I found out it is earn a buck too.
I also have 2200 acres of state lands 20 minutes away.DNR built several parking lots and sign in booths for us bowhunters. You just never know whos walking in on you to spoil a hunt.Actually there is four i can think of.Franklin Creek-Lowden Miller-Castle Rock-Green River within 20 minutes.I would have to say Lowden Miller is the best for mature Bucks and less pressured hunting. The backside is bordered by the Rock River. The rest by Farm ag fields.I started building a deer cart to haul them out on the trails instead of dragging them out.Modified two wheeled dolly with 14" hard plastic rimmed bicycle tires. Then i can strap my bow and backpack with the deer and walk it out.Thats the therory anyways.....
