Default Do You Prefer The Gut Hook Knives ?

powderburns,

I just thought of using a utility knife a few weeks ago. I used it to skin a couple of coons. It worked great like you said.

Something else that works great for skinning,is a linoleum knike. That has a blade like a hawk bill.(which is what i call them)
I have only used then on Whitetails.Don't know how they would work on small game though.

Hey Mossyhorns,

I coulda guessed you would come up with the linoleuum knife since you are a carpet layer. Good Idea though.

For deer I prefer a gut hook.

For small game I use a straight knife.

I like to use the straight blade, old habbits are hard to break I have been useing my knife for over 33 years its a old timer and very sharp it has a heavy blade that can split the rib cage very easy.

Straight blade for me. Tried a gut hook once on a whitetail and ended up with hair all over. Never again for me. Maybe I did not use it right, but I did not care for it. Right now I use a Knives of Alaska Wolverine and a Gerber folding saw.

i've seen them but never used them. I use a marbles drop point, it holds a great edge. I did see something new at the local gun and archery shop though. It's the same concept as a gut hook knife but with a twist. It's a ring that resembles a bear claw with the inner part of the claw being the blade. It was $10.00 and looked like it would work but in the same token it also looked kind of hoke. If it did work it sure would be light and wouldn't take up much space. Something to check out,who knows it could be something you can't live without. As for me I'll still stick with a regular sharp knife, always have used one and It's what I'm use to.

Don't fix it if it ain't broke
