Default What Is A Great Knife Sharpener

Hi Rob and Welcome to Huntseek.
There are several knife sharpeners on the market today. But i like the old fashion way of using the sharpening stone and hone.I like the Surgical Black Arkansas stone. It also polishes the blade as i am sharpening the blade. Then i hone it very lightly.I think people have a tendency to beat the knife edge against the steel and distortes the edge to just put on it.
There are also Ceramic Stones,Diamond Files.
I just enjoy working the blade to a razors egde. But then i am a carpetlayer too...lol

I have never been any good at using a stone or steel. I like the kind that has 2 short steel rods coming out of the handle. You lay the handle on a table with the steel rods hanging over the edge. Then drag your knife blade thru the V in the 2 rods. It does an excelent job and you can get 4 different steels for bevel, rough, hone, and polish.

I'm not sure where to get the sharpeners mentioned above. I usually see them at hunting, fishing, and gun shows.

An excellent choice is the Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker. I know by experience...

I use a steel rod. It does a good job. Next in line is a good stone esp for really dull knives.

Rob -

I still use a stone and also use one of those fance plastic handle sharpners that all you have to do run the blade through. They work great for a quick edge but seem to dull a little faster than if I've sharpened with a stone.

I recently picked up a sharpner and what a difference!!!!!!!!

My brother-in-law has it right now and I can't recall the name of it but it is like a kit.

-You put your blade in a steel T shaped vise.
-The narrow stones have rods that attach to them
-you put the rods into holes in the steel T (this gives you the perfect angle)
-you work from a rough stone all the way to an ultra fine stone

I recently had to sharpen my buck knife. The edge on it was better than it was from the factory!!!!!!!!

Just got back from cutting up a deer with it. A buddy of a buddy was watching me cut the deer up and his first comment after 10 seconds of cutting was "Man that is a sharp knife!!!!"

I gently touched the blade against my palm and it left a 1 " cut on me.

The stones come in plastic holders that are color coded and will tell you the grit of the stone. If you are serious about getting a knife really sharp this is the ticket.

It is very important to get the rod the same height as the stone. I had a guy show me how to use it before I bought it and it is simple and easy to use. It is not as simple as a steel rod or a pocket sharpener but it is close.
