Default Black Bear W/ Taurus 357 Mag

I would like to know if a 357 Mag is Adequate for harvesting a Black Bear. I live
in Wisconsin & my Permit should be up this year. I will be in a treestand & the shot
should be 25 yards or under. Thanks in advance for any info or experience you can share with me.

NBARON, If it were me and the 357mag was the only handgun I had I would go for it. In a tree stand better yet,if useing the 158gr load go for a good hart- lung shot stay away from the shoulder area unless useing heavier bullets. In the tree stand your pretty much out of the kick your ass area, and give old Blackie time to die. The biggest game I've taken with a 357 was a 5x6 bull elk and it worked great. A bear can be tuffer the nails if shot placement is off ,so beware. I have seen black bear take 5-6 hits with a 44mag 240gr at 20yds and play heck dieing. Outlaw

Under the right circumstances, yes it should work. Not to disagree with outlaw, but if it were me I'd opt for a little heavier bullet, something on the lines of a 170gr. to 180gr. and I'd only take shots that I was positive I could put the bullet exactly where it needed to go.

I've had terrible luck with the .357 Magnum on Whitetails at close range, so for me I would be more careful about the bullets I used on a Black Bear.

Larry's right, heavier is better. Don't do as I do, do as Larry says. Heavy is better. I don't care if I get chewed up by an old nasty bear. I've came close before a few times. I aways wanted to go out of this world hand to hand with a bear as Brat Pit did in Legends of the Fall !!!!!!!!! Outlaw

Hi there, I've hunted black bear with handguns and I now use a freedom arms 454 casull. I dont mean to over step the other replys but the 357 mag. just dont have the penetration needed for black bear. This is one animal you need to respect when hunting him, and he deserves to be taken humanly. I would use no less than a well loaded 44 mag. with hard cast bullets. It takes a good handgun, good bullets, and good shot placement. Good luck and let us know how the hunt goes. Trail Boss.

Trail Boss, you are right about the 357 mag. I do carry a 357mag when out hiking and scouting because I do not like the bulk and weight of larger bore handgun. I don't hunt black bear with it I just like to carry it with me when I'am out and about and if I need it I've at least have something with me if I need it. Maybe someday I'll get a lite weight big bore to carry? Thanks Outlaw h34r:

Stick with a 40 cal. bore, no less for bears.
Guy,s are correct about a larger bore handgun. Black bears got a lotta flesh to go through to get to vitals.
Good Luck ,

Ya in this day and age I would go with at least a 41mag-44mag- 45 Long colt-454mag-460mag-480mag- 500 mag s.w. all with heavy hot loads.

My vote would be for a S&W or Ruger in nothing less than a .44 mag. I carry a Ruger Bisley in .44 mag when I am out and about in bear country, and try to give them their space.
